I Don't Understand

I don't understand why the world is so vain.
Why I long for sunshine and instead get rain.
Why bathrooms in France require a toll.
Why people say books are boring and dull.

But most of all…
Why people die young,
and miss a whole lifetime of happiness and fun.
Why people who do nothing get whatever they please,
while people who work are still begging on their knees.

But I do understand…
Why there's day and night.
The speed of sound, and the speed of light.
How gravity keeps us on the floor.
That two plus two equals four.
